What is AI visibility and why does it matter for local businesses?
When someone asks ChatGPT “who’s the best roofer in Lansing?”, it doesn’t show ten blue links. It names a few businesses. AI visibility is the work of becoming one of them.
This isn’t a niche channel anymore. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that use of ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations jumped from 6% to 45% of consumers in a year, making AI the third most popular source of business recommendations. Google’s own AI Mode and AI Overviews draw on the same Maps and Business Profile data as the map pack.
What AI tools actually read
Each tool works a little differently, and the research is moving fast. Here’s what’s well supported today:
- ChatGPT searches the web, leaning on Bing, and reads the top results. Search Engine Land reported that it doesn’t read Bing Places profile data directly. Steady Demand’s 2026 test of 2,880 prompts found Yelp data in nearly 96% of ChatGPT’s local answers.
- Gemini and Google AI Mode use Google’s own Maps and Business Profile data, so your Google profile matters directly.
- Perplexity cites the web pages it reads, so clear, factual pages get quoted.
In Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, 3 of the top 5 AI-visibility factors were citation factors: being listed and mentioned on other sites. Darren Shaw, who runs the survey, put it simply: “In AI SEO, mentions (citations) are the new link.”
What that means for your business
You don’t need a separate AI strategy. You need the basics done well, with a few additions:
- A website AI tools can read. Everything that matters in the HTML, short factual sentences and a direct answer at the top of each page.
- Complete listings everywhere. Especially Yelp, the BBB and your industry’s directories, with the same name, number and services.
- Reviews on more than one site. Google first, then the review sites AI tools read.
- Mentions you didn’t write. Local “best of” lists, news coverage and community sites.
Then we check, every month, whether the AI tools are naming you.
What's included in AI visibility?
-
AI answer check
We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and log who gets named and which sources are cited.
-
A site AI tools can read
Your services, towns, prices, hours and reviews written into the page's HTML, since most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript.
-
Pages that answer questions
A short, direct answer at the top of each page and headings phrased as the questions customers ask. That's the text AI tools quote.
-
Crawler access
A robots.txt that welcomes AI search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, with Bing indexing set up, since ChatGPT leans on Bing's results.
-
The sources AI reads
Complete, consistent listings on Yelp, the BBB and the directories in your industry, plus reviews beyond Google.
-
Mentions on other sites
Getting named in local "best of" lists, local news and community sites, which AI tools treat as independent recommendations.
-
Monthly re-check
The same questions asked every month, with the answers in your report, so you can see whether you're in them.
How much does AI visibility cost?
AI visibility is included in the monthly local SEO plans, because most of the work (your site, profile, listings and reviews) is the same work that ranks you on Google. We don't sell it as a separate gimmick.
See every plan and what it includes on our local SEO pricing page.
How long until you see results?
Website and listing fixes can show up in AI answers within weeks, as tools recrawl the web. ChatGPT search relies heavily on Bing, so Bing indexing speeds things up.
AI answers change often, even for the same question. We track the trend over months, not one screenshot.
Why Ramp Local SEO for AI visibility?
- We base the work on published research about what AI tools read, and we tell you where the evidence is thin.
- No llms.txt upsell. Google says it doesn't use the file, and AI crawlers rarely request it.
- We check AI answers every month and show you the results, including when you're not in them.
- The same work also helps your Google rankings, so nothing is wasted.
AI Visibility (AEO & GEO) FAQs
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO is getting your pages ranked in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) is getting your content used as the direct answer. GEO (generative engine optimization) is getting named in AI-written answers from tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. For a local business, most of the work overlaps.
Do people really use ChatGPT to find local businesses?
Increasingly. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and AI crawlers rarely request it. It's harmless, but anyone selling it as AI optimization is selling something that doesn't move results.
Where does ChatGPT get local business information?
Mostly from web search results, which lean on Bing, and from directories and review sites. A 2026 test of 2,880 prompts by Steady Demand found Yelp data in nearly 96% of ChatGPT's local answers.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?
No. Nobody can. AI answers change from one question to the next. We improve the sources AI tools read and measure how often you're named over time.
