Technical SEO in Lansing, MI

Technical SEO makes sure Google can find, read and index every page on your website. Ramp Local SEO checks how your site is crawled, what Google actually sees on each page, which pages are indexed and how fast they load, then fixes the problems in order of impact and explains each one in plain English.

What is technical SEO and why does it matter for local rankings?

Before Google can rank a page, it has to find the page, read what’s on it and decide to keep it in its index. Technical SEO is the work that makes each of those steps go right. When one fails, nothing else you do for that page counts.

For a small local business site, the problems are rarely exotic. These are the most common:

  • Pages left out of the index. A leftover “noindex” tag from when the site was being built, or a robots.txt file that blocks the whole site.
  • Content Google can’t see. Text, menus or phone numbers that only appear after JavaScript runs. Google can usually render it, but not always right away, and most AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript at all.
  • Redirect chains. An old page that redirects to another redirect before reaching the right page, often after a redesign. Each extra hop wastes crawling and can lose ranking signals.
  • Duplicates. The same page at http and https, with and without www, or with and without a trailing slash. Google has to guess which one to rank.
  • Missing pages that look fine. Deleted pages that send visitors to the homepage instead of returning a real “not found” error, which Google treats as a soft 404.

Crawl budget isn’t your problem

You’ll hear agencies talk about “crawl budget”. Google’s own documentation says it’s a concern for very large sites, roughly a million pages or more, or sites with 10,000+ pages that change daily. A local business site with 20 or 200 pages doesn’t have a crawl budget problem. It has a findability problem, and that’s what we fix.

Speed, kept in proportion

Google’s Core Web Vitals measure how fast the main content loads, how quickly the page responds to a tap and whether the layout jumps around. We aim for “good” on mobile. Once you’re there, more speed work rarely moves rankings. Your Google Business Profile, reviews and content matter more.

What's included in technical SEO?

  • Crawl and index check

We compare the pages you have with the pages Google has indexed, using Search Console, and find out why any are missing.

  • What Google actually sees

We check that headings, text, links, your phone number and schema are in the page's HTML, not added later by JavaScript that some crawlers skip.

  • robots.txt and sitemap

A robots.txt that doesn't block what should rank, and a sitemap that lists only real, indexable pages.

  • Redirects and broken pages

Every old address goes to its new page in one 301 hop. Missing pages return a real 404, not a redirect to the homepage.

  • Canonicals and duplicates

One version of every page. https, no www (or always www), consistent trailing slashes and a canonical tag that points to itself.

  • Speed and Core Web Vitals

Mobile loading, responsiveness and layout shifts measured against Google's "good" thresholds, then fixed where they fail.

  • Schema markup

LocalBusiness, Service and Breadcrumb markup that matches your Google Business Profile and passes Google's Rich Results Test.

How much does technical SEO cost?

A one-time technical audit and fix costs less than ongoing work. The price depends on the size of the site, the platform it runs on and whether you or we make the changes. Technical checks are included in every monthly local SEO plan.

How long until you see results?

Fixes like an accidental noindex tag or a robots.txt block can bring pages back into Google within days of a recrawl.

Broader fixes, like redirects after a messy site move, can take a few weeks to settle as Google recrawls each URL.

Why Ramp Local SEO for technical SEO?

  • We explain every issue in plain English, with what it costs you and what fixing it takes.
  • We fix problems in order of impact, not by working through a 200-item tool report.
  • We follow Google's own documentation, and we tell you when a popular tactic isn't supported by it.

Technical SEO FAQs

What is the difference between technical SEO and regular SEO?

Technical SEO is about whether Google can crawl, read and index your pages. The rest of SEO is about whether those pages, your Google Business Profile and your reputation make you the best answer once Google can see them.

How do I know if my website has technical SEO problems?

Google Search Console's page indexing report shows which pages aren't indexed and why. If important pages are missing, you rank for nothing, or traffic dropped after a redesign, start there. The free audit includes a quick check.

Does website speed affect Google rankings?

A little. Google uses Core Web Vitals as part of page experience, but it's a tie-breaker. A page that passes "good" gains little from getting faster, while a page that fails badly can lose to a similar competitor.

Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?

Usually not, if you want AI tools to recommend you. Search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are what put you in AI answers. Blocking training crawlers like GPTBot doesn't affect Google Search either way.
